Long Island (in English: Long Island) is an island eighty miles (nearly 130 km) long in the Bahamas that is split by the Tropic of Cancer. The island is only four miles (6 km) wide, but extends for a distance of greater length. Long Island is about 165 miles or 265 miles southeast of Nassau. Some of the main settlements are Clarence Clarence City or Town, which is the capital of the island, Hamilton (famous for its cave trips), The Buckley, Scrub Hill, Simms, Salt Pond and Stella Maris. Long Island is one of the districts of the Bahamas recognized as one of the most picturesque in the entire archipelago.
The island was originally called by the Arawak name "Yuma". It was rechristened "Fernandina" by Christopher Columbus on his first voyage in 1492.
Tourists enjoy sailing, fishing, diving, snorkeling and relaxing on beaches and exploring its unique landscape, consisting of steep hills and waves along the eastern Atlantic coast, with calmer waters on the west coast .
